Lemons, Lumbar hernias, and LCD TVs

Matt and Mariel gave us a taste of Southern California last year: a little Limon dwarf Meyer Lemon Tree. Very Pretty. After a tough winter in our bedroom (much too dry), the summer weather has coaxed some tiny lemons out.

Little Meyer Lemons

Betsy finally had her lumber hernia fixed this Wednesday. She has been putting it off for several years now. They are pretty rare (only 300 have been recorded, ever). Lumbar hernia is not to be confused with a herniated lumbar disc. See here for typical medical discussion of them.
The surgery went well and she should be all set now. Thursday evening we had a town wide power outage. When I tried watching the news later that night in our bedroom, I discovered that the FIOS Set Top Box in our bedroom did not survive the outage.
The next morning, as I was waiting for a Tech to either resuscitate it, or send a new one, I realized that Betsy would be spending at least a few days recuperating in the bedroom so rather than waste everyone’s time working on the dead low def STB, I had them upgrade it to an HD one. Then I ran out to BJs and picked up a 27″ Samsung full HD (1080p) at a great price. Then I had to figure out what to do with the STB (I relocated the one from the kitchen for now), and the Bose we use as the sound system. I picked up a set of plastic shelving, cut the legs down to the right height and installed it that way:

Plastic shelf for new TV

As you can see, the plastic shelf was really not meant to hold the 18lb TV. It sagged in the middle until it was resting on the Bose.
On Saturday I tried Target, Sears, Best-Buy and WalMart but none of them had anything that would work. So I went down to the workshop and cobbled on together from an oak tread I had gotten several years ago to replace the (still) cracked step on the stairs up from the front door, and some redwood left over from the never used skirt for the hot tub.
Voila. It came out pretty nice. A little minwax and it should look pretty close to the armoire.

The (un)finished project

Fun in San Diego

We are halfway through our visit to the WestCoast Cornells. Mariel is off on Thursday so we went down to Shell Beach. Dex tried out his scooter on the hill and Chase tried his trike.

Saturday morning, Matt, Dex, Chase and I went to The Home Depot. Dex and Chase built periscopes, and we got the materials for the soda bottle rocket launcher.
In the afternoon we went to the pool for a while:

Betsy and I took Dexter and Chase (or the other way around) to see Toy Story 3 on Saturday night.
Sunday mid-day Dex and Matt and I built the launcher and did a few proof of concept launches out on the street. Concept has been proved!

Turned out the bottle was not fully mounted on the launch tube.

And later that night we went to the Aquarium and watched two sets of fireworks.

Here are some pics from Saturday.

Summer starts at Camp Cornell

No it is not that the pool is opened. That should happen in the next few weeks. The first official sign is that the entertainment center location moves up to the back porch.

We moved the TV, STB, dvd player and Hermes up to the porch last Saturday night so we could watch the Celtics/Cavaliers game. Woody was not impressed with the Celtic’s fade in the second half but he was happy to be watching it on the porch.

It took a little work and help from Matt but over Sunday and Monday morning, Hermes was upgraded to Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04), the alsa drivers to 1.0.23 and Voila! we finally have HDMI sound. So all is good.
Well almost. Late Sunday night we found out that the entertainment stuff is on the same circuit as the microwave and when Betsy tried heating up some supper for Kait, the breaker tripped. I hadn’t heard the microwave so I thought we lost half of the power coming in to the house. I was in the middle of a call to Hudson Power and Light when Betsy asked if it could be the breaker. I checked and sure enough. I had to call HP&L back and sheepishly say, “never mind!”.
Now we have to figure out how to get that on a different circuit while not violating anyone’s aversion to actual wires being visible.

Snow is melting

Woody is getting excited that the snow is really melting and soon he will be able to go in the pool and run around in the backyard.
